You’ve only got one shot to live in the moment.FILE 0001 // Personal Archives // Fowler, G
In 1988, my grandmother, Clovis, went on a cruise to the
Bahamas. A fellow Leo, my Nanny knew the important of capturing the moment, which led her to purchasing a Polaroid Sun 600 camera.
After her death in October of 2010, I felt a strong pull to many of her old posessions: elastic-waistband denim, vinyls,
floral shirts (inevitably ordered from QVC), casserole dishes
with mushroom motifs, costume jewelry, and, of course, the
good ‘ole Sun 600.
It has taken me longer than I’d like to admit to share the
photos I’ve captured over the years. My Grandma’s Polaroid
has been my faithful companion - from Saõ Paolo to Oaxaca,
from Guatemala to New York, from LA to the Amazon Rainforest, and everywhere in between.
It’s likely, if you know me even a little bit, that you’ve seen me
with this relic. It means the world to me and also has a way of
slowing me down. It reminds me of the importance of taking
your shot and of intentionality and of a world not so long ago where you couldn’t curate reality to the degree in which we do today.
This one’s for you, Nanny.
